April 12-14, 2024– Pennsylvania Canal Society Spring Tour – Erie Extension Canal. The Erie Extension was built to connect the Beaver Division to Lake Erie at Erie, Pa. The tour will visit the remains of the canal along with a visit to the canal museum at Greenville.
April 13, 2024 – The Canal Society of Indiana, Whitewater Canal Symposium and Annual Meeting. Fayette County Historical Museum, Connersville, Indiana. The program will explore the Whitewater Valley, canal and railroad.
April 20, 2024 – Feeder Canal Alliance, Glens Falls, NY – Brewfest to benefit the Alliance. See the website for details.
April 19-21, 2024– Canal Society of Ohio, Spring tour – Miami and Erie Canal, Junction to Defiance to Independence Dam State Park. The trip includes Auglaize Village and Tuttle Memorial Museum. See details on the website.
April 28, 2024 – Middlesex Canal Association, annual meeting at the museum. Details TBA. Check the website for this and other MCA events/walks/bike rides.
May 3-5, 2024– Canal Society of New York State Spring Study Tour, The Canals of Niagara; Niagara Falls and Lockport, headquarters in Lockport, NY. The full program is here.
June 16, 2024 – D&R Canal Watch, The D&R Canal Watch has been working with state park staff and the commission to plan a number of celebratory events for 2024. The featured speaker at our annual meeting on Sunday, June 16 at 2:00 p.m. will be canal historian Capt. Bill McKelvey. In 1976 Captain Bill wrote The Delaware & Raritan Canal: A Pictorial History,a photographic treasure trove of historic views of our canal. Two years later he followed that successful book with Champlain to Chesapeake: A Canal Era Pictorial Cruise, which included many photos of the D&R as well as the other inland waterways along the East Coast. June 16, 2024 – D&H Canal Historical Society, Five Locks Walk, High Falls, NY. Join historian Bill Merchant for a guided walk along the flight of five locks in High Falls. See the website for details about this and other D&H events.
June 15-24, 2024 – James River Batteau Festival, Virginia Canals and Navigations Society. The James River Batteau Festival is an eight-day event featuring authentic replicas of the sleek, shallow-draft merchant boats upon which the Old Dominion rode to its first era of economic prosperity. Beginning on the waterfront of Lynchburg the festival moves along a 200-year-old route, stopping each day in the historic towns and communities along the way. Each evening is a celebration of the cultural heritage of this legendary river basin in music, song, dance and storytelling, plus lots of plain old-time Virginia socializing.
June 24-26, 2024 – World Canals Conference, Bydgoszcz, Poland. See website for details.
July 13, 2024 – Canal Society of Ohio, Business meeting and mini-tour, Columbus / Buckeye Lake region.
Fall, 2024– Canal Society of Ohio, Fall tour – Exploring the canals of Southwest Ohio. Details and dates TBA
Fall, 2025 – Canal Society of Ohio, Fall tour – A Return to the National Road in the St. Clairsville area to the Ohio River. Details TBA.
September 21-25, 2025, The World Canals Conference will be held in Buffalo, NY. The host hotel is the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The theme of the conference is Sustaining Our Multidimensional Inland Waterways.
