Canal History
As with most of the coastal states, the construction of inland waterways in Georgia used the rivers that flowed from the interior to the ocean. This created a network of “deep-end” navigations that served a limited area.

CANAL GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS
The Savannah-Ogeechee Canal Society operates the Savannah-Ogeechee Canal Museum and Nature Center.
The Augusta Canal National Heritage Area is a national Heritage Area that tells the story of the use of the Savannah River and its navigation.
Major Repositories and Archives
The Brunswick – Glynn County Joint Planning Commission wrote quite a detailed history of the Brunswick-Altamaha Canal in 1981 and it is available as a pdf.
CANAL INDEX PAGES
The “canal index” project is an on-going project of the ACS to document canal sites. Most of the information is from the 1970-1990 time period, however new pages are being added. Feel free to contribute to this project by submitting a form.
